Welcoming the new scholastic year 2023/2024

Over the past years, GUG has consistently addressed the specific issues and needs that Gozitan students may face, and this year was certainly no different. In recent months, GUG has held meetings with various Government Officials to articulate the challenges that Gozitan students might encounter as the new school year approaches.

One such meeting being the GUG’s meeting with Mr Horace Laudi, a representative from the Ministry of Education. The topics mentioned throughout the meeting include the following:

* Practical Sessions in Gozo: *

GUG explored the possibility of conducting practical sessions in Gozo for local health science students. While Mr. Laudi was open to the idea, the challenge of finding specialized personnel to supervise these sessions emerged. It was suggested that an agreement between the University of Malta and Queen Mary’s Barts, a private entity, could be beneficial, though it could be costly for the university. This idea had received positive feedback during GUG’s previous meeting with the Prime Minister of Malta in collaboration with the Għal Għawdex coalition.

* Hybrid Lectures during Bad Weather: *

We proposed the introduction of hybrid lectures during adverse weather conditions when the Gozo Channel is inaccessible. This would make better use of the Gozo Campus, extending its purpose beyond examinations.

* Gozitan Subsidies: *

GUG also discussed the extension of the General Grant (166) to cover August, September, and October, particularly for students attending practical sessions during the summer months.

* Accommodations Grants: *

Regarding accommodation grants, we explored increasing the maximum number of students eligible from 3 to 4 in one flat. Additionally, we considered extending the grant to a full year in cases where landlords require year-long leases, but noted potential issues due to the grant’s existing cap of 900 per year. It is important to acknowledge that these ideas aforementioned are proposals put forth by students, intended to benefit their fellow students. GUG aims to serve as a stepping stone to convey these concerns to the appropriate authorities which signifies the initial step in the path toward making positive changes.

GUG also wishes to express its recognition of the challenges faced during the previous academic year, particularly regarding the location of WiseFlow on Campus sessions for Gozitan students. Over the summer, GUG received assurances that these sessions will be conducted at the Gozo Campus during the upcoming examination sessions in January/February. This positive development reinforces our commitment to advocating for the needs and preferences of Gozitan students on both campuses. Furthermore GUG is set to commence meetings with Dr. Colin Borg, the Registrar at the University of Malta, which will empower GUG to effectively relay student complaints. While we have made significant strides in addressing various issues, we remain committed to the ongoing betterment of the Gozitan student experience.

There is still much work to be done, and GUG is dedicated to ensuring that all Gozitan students have the resources and support they need for a productive and enjoyable academic year. As we embark on a new academic year, GUG would like to extend its warmest wishes to all students for a successful and fulfilling scholastic journey ahead. GUG understands that challenges may arise along the way, and we want to assure you that we are here to lend a helping hand whenever you need it.

GUG is here to support and advocate for you.
