GUG’s reaction re. the EDU Fast Ferry Card

Following the announcement of the EDU Fast Ferry Card by the Minister for Education, Justyne Caruana, students and teachers using the Fast Ferry service will now benefit from a reimbursement of a substantial part of the ticket fare.

What do you need to know?

  • Gozitan students and teachers who commute daily to Malta and back, are eligible for this scheme. Students must be pursuing a course in the following three institutions: The University of Malta; Mcast; and/or Junior College.
  • This reimbursement will be given irrespective of the operator with whom one decides to travel.
  • To benefit from this scheme, one must apply online by filling in an application form which may be accessed from the Ministry of Education website.
  • These applications close on the 3rd of November 2021.
  • The EDU Fast Ferry card must be used every time when using the Fast Ferry service.
  • Students and educators will only be reimbursed for trips taken during the academic year.
  • Payments will be made in arrears, every three months.
  • The verification of how many times a student or an educator has made use of the Fast Ferry service will be provided by the operators themselves to the Ministry of Education after the applicant has given his or her consent to pass such information.
  • The reimbursement expense will amount to a maximum of €250 per scholastic year.
  • This reimbursement is in addition to all the incentives that are already given to Gozitan students and educators who live in Gozo and commute daily to Malta and back.

The GUG positively welcomes the introduction of the EDU Fast Ferry Card and believes that such an incentive will encourage more students and teachers to make use of this service as well as facilitate their lives even further.
