After addressing the media earlier on today, the Minister for Transport and Capital Projects, Ian Borg has announced that the government will be investing €5 million in maritime structure for the operation of the fast ferry service. This much awaited means of transport has finally arrived.
Whilst ensuring that such process will be carried out in the most transparent and complete manner possible, the Minister called upon any operators who might be interested to cater for such a service.
Such operators are expected to commence to supply this service from the 1st of June 2021, provided that they comply with certain criteria set out by the Transport Authority. The Port Notice, which is the result of three failed tenders, comes to us after a decision by the Cabinet was taken to liberalise the shipping market on this specific rout.
Together with Minister Clint Camilleri, Minister for Gozo, Minister Ian Borg went into the details of this service and stated that it will be carried out between the Grand Harbour, Valletta and the Mġarr Harbour by direct fast ferry which will be available for passengers only. Additionally, the government and its Ministries are working to have a public international call for the service of the Public Service Obligation between the islands, which would include the transport of private vehicles and others.
Dr Camilleri explained that whilst the ferry is expected to take less than 45 mins in its commute, he believes that this service will fulfil the need of having a better connectivity for Gozitans, which will offer more efficiency and comfort to Gozitan workers and students.
On behalf of the GUG Executive, we look forward to welcoming this crucial service for us Gozitans and at the same time hope that in the foreseeable future it will be extended to reach more harbours, apart from those already mentioned.
