GUG Statement on Ongoing Ferry Service Challenge

GUG expresses its deep concern over Gozo’s ongoing connectivity issues, a matter that was prominently discussed during Gozo Week at the University Quad.

This aligns with the concerns raised by the Gozo Business Chamber regarding the persistent challenges with ferry services connecting the island. The temporary unavailability of the MV Nikolaos has once again underscored the strain on Gozo’s primary maritime connection and the urgent need for infrastructure investment that aligns with the island’s growing demands.

The situation highlights a systemic issue: even with 4 ferries in operation, the service barely meets the needs of commuters, students, workers, tourists, and others relying on this critical link. Reducing the fleet to 3 ferries, as happens during maintenance periods, results in significant delays. This places a burden on both commuters and ferry employees who must endure extended working hours to compensate.

We urge the relevant authorities to prioritise sustainable solutions that ensure consistent and efficient ferry service, minimising disruptions that impact the daily lives of those dependent on this essential transport route.
