The Gozo University Group (GUG) is aware of the ongoing safety concern on Liesse Street, in front of the Gozo Fast Ferry terminal, where the recent installation of a railing has obstructed access to the previously utilised zebra crossing. Consequently, pedestrians are now compelled to cross the busy road twice near the roundabout, an area which lacks any designated pedestrian crossing, thereby creating a significant safety hazard.
Since Wednesday, GUG has been actively engaged in discussions with the Ministry for Transport, Infrastructure, and Public Works. The Ministry has advised that plans are in progress for the installation of traffic lights in the vicinity of the roundabout. This measure aims to reduce traffic congestion arising from uncontrolled pedestrian crossings and to enhance public safety.
While GUG acknowledges the merit of initiatives intended to improve pedestrian safety and traffic flow in the area, it strongly urges the relevant authorities to take immediate action. This includes either reinstating the original zebra crossing through the removal of the newly erected barrier or promptly providing an alternative marked pedestrian crossing. Such interim measures are essential to ensure public safety in such a busy area whilst pending the implementation of a permanent solution.
